About Psynova Neurotech - History
Established in 2005 by Prof. Sabine Bahn MD, Ph.D, MRCPsych, and Professor Chris Lowe PhD, Psynova Neurotech Ltd is an independent company commercially developing and exploiting novel biomarkers for Neuropsychiatric disorders.
Using state of the art techniques, Psynova Neurotech will build on Prof. Bahn’s 12 years of ground breaking research, commercially exploiting biomarkers in the treatment of Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder, developing clinical diagnostics, novel therapeutics and tests for monitoring patient response to medication. Initially concentrating on these illnesses, Psynova Neurotech will move into related therapeutic areas, such as depression, neurodegenerative disorders and substance abuse, as well as sleep and eating disorders, where it has relevant expertise. Its unique identification of biomarkers will aid in the discovery and development of more effective drugs and identification of patient sub-groups, responsive to particular treatments, allowing for more personalised medicines in the future.
Working closely with its academic partners, the Cambridge Centre for Neuropsychiatric Research (CCNR) and the Institute of Biotechnology (IOB), Psynova Neurotech will exploit a unique BioBank of brain and tissue samples and a proprietary database of information (PsyData) generated from genomic, proteomic and metabolic studies on BioBank samples. Developed over a 3 year period, PsyData contains comprehensive data on biomarkers specific to Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are major burdens to society affecting at least 2% of the population worldwide and costing hundreds of billions of pounds. Diagnosis and prognosis are complex and subjective, and the available drugs and treatment regimes are inadequate. This is largely due to a lack of understanding of the pathologies at a molecular level. At present, there are no validated biomarkers and diagnostics for these disorders, nor are the underlying disease processes understood, meaning only symptomatic relief can be obtained from current medications. Psynova Neurotech intends to address all of these deficiencies.
